The Young and Old

By Anna Kalma - Posted on 12 December 2012

Jacob and SadieJacob and SadieTe Aroha regular, Jacob Kalma (14) and Sadie Swap (98) paired up on Thursday night for the Matamata Bridge Club and capped off a great year of bridge with a session win at the annual Christmas Event.

The two players represent the young and old of the bridge club with an amazing 84 year differential, illustrating that this is one of the few competitive games that can span generations.

Jacob, who has been playing for two years, is a member of the Waikato-Bay of Plenty Youth Team which competed at the National Congress held recently in Hamilton. In contrast, Sadie has been playing for 50 years and still plays weekly at the MAtamata club demonstrating her acumen with regular session wins. Sadie who turns 99 in January is looking forward to the 2013 season but admitted to a few nerves before pairing up on Thursday with her new playing partner "we made a few stuff ups initially, but once I relaxed we started playing well and formed a good understanding".
